Distinguishing morphological features of Family:

▪ Body: length 6-8 mm, 4 membranous wings; front wings are larger than back wings, constricted between thorax and abdomen

▪ Head: oval shaped, elongated chewing mandibles

▪ Antennae: long, and less than or equal to 10 segments

▪ Tarsi: segmented ~5

Ecological importance: Specific to single oak species, can be parasitic; interfere with some plant tissues normal development

Economic importance: provide a source of honey
