The Digital Animation Project

Overview: You will construct some rudimentary models and animations in Blender

Blender Download: blender.org. Windows users, please download the Installer. Mac users, please download the version that corresponds to the type of Mac listed. The version on the classroom computers is Blender 2.57, even though the latest version is 2.64. If you want to use 2.57, download this file for Windows or select the version from this list relevant to your computer (Windows or Mac).
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please read all instructions thoroughly and carefully before calling on the instructor for help. Please remember that your neighbors, the Blender help menus and the internet are also all resources that you can consult. Please begin early to give yourself time to ask questions and resolve any technical difficulties.
If you want me to look over your project before you turn it in, please see me in person during class or during my office hours. I will not review projects submitted via e-mail.
Before You Begin
1. Edit your Student Profile page to include a link to your Project 4 page. Give this page the name F12_LastnameFirstname_2110_Pjt4 (ex. F12_CuneoJoshua_2110_Pjt4).
2. Copy and paste the following template on your Project 4 page: Project 4 Template.
3. If you're using a Mac, go to System Preferences and make sure the mouse matches the configuration below:
1. Start Blender using the Project 4 Animation Starter File.
2. Using Blender, create a five-second animation with the criteria listed below.
- Object Requirements
- It contains at least 5 objects (not including the camera and light sources) of different shapes.
- One of these objects is a plane that serves as a background.
- The background completely obscures the blue "universe".
- All objects are colored or textured (or both).
- The background plane is an imported photo.
- Animation Requirements
- At least three of the objects (not including the camera and light sources) are animated (i.e. they are moving in some fashion).
- At least one object rotates and translates (i.e. slides).
- At least one object changes scale.
- At least one of the rotating objects is attached to one other object that moves along with it but does not rotate.
- Lighting Requirements
- There are at least two light sources.
- At least one light source is stationary.
- At least one light source is attached to one of the moving objects in such a way that as the object moves through the scene, moving shadows are cast.
3. Export your animation to a QuickTime (.mov) file with a resolution of 400 px x 300 px (although you can make smaller renderings to test your animation).
4. Render and save a .jpg image of one frame of your animation. This frame should show all five objects discussed above.
5. Upload both your QuickTime file and your rendered image to the wiki. NOTE: Your movie will probably be in the ballpark of 10 MB, and it will take a few minutes for the wiki to upload the file. Please be patient.
6. Update the wiki template with your image and download link to your QuickTime file. Include a 1-paragraph description of what this movie is supposed to show. Be sure to mention all objects and light sources and how each moves during the animation.
