Creative/Multimedia Software Definition

Creative and multimedia software is a combination of viewing and organization & creating and editing. These can often be split into two categories: only viewing and playback options or creating/editing audio, video, and images.

Types of Creative/Multimedia Software

  • Media Player: a type of software that consists of both audio and video. Media players only provide playback options, not editing, and provide the user with the following commands: Play, Pause, Stop, Fast Forward, Rewind, and Volume controls.
    • Example #1: iTunes - a type of media software that allows users to organize and playback both audio and video files. Examples of these files would be music, movies, and TV shows.
      • Cost: iTunes is free to download but may require a monthly fee to use other features such as Apple Music, which allows users to listen to any song in their 40-million-song catalog. (first 3 months free, followed by $9.99 per month, or $14.99 per month for a family subscription for up to six people).
      • In order to get iTunes, it must be downloaded from the Apple Website
    • Example #2: Windows Media Player - a type of media software that allows users to open and play any type of media file. Features of Windows Media Player include file support, audio sync, video effects, image effects, personalization, and file conversion.
      • Cost: Windows Media Player is free to download, but in order to get the full version, the user must be a Windows User.
      • Windows Media Player is a downloadable media application that runs on the Microsoft Windows operating system. It is also available on mobile devices. To download it, click here
  • Audio Software: Audio software applies only to auditory text and sound and allows a person to obtain audio from the various sources, combine several tracks into one, utilize quality control sound effects, edit clips, and adapt from one format to another. Audio software includes digital audio editor and digital audio workstations. A digital audio editor is a type of software that allows a person to make changes to and record audio while digital audio workstations are used more by professionals.
    • Example #1: Audition by Adobe - This software program has all of the utilities of a regular audio program, but also has many interface layouts, powerful editing abilities similar to those of workstations, and the ability to edit multiple tracks while removing outside noise almost perfectly.
      • Cost: $19.99 per month, affordable for many
      • You can purchase/download it at the Adobe website
    • Example #2: ProTools by Avid - This program is much more used by professionals, though novices can use it too. It focuses more on editing pre-made sounds rather than creating new ones.
  • Video Software: a type of software that allows for video editing. In order to edit videos using video software, users must record their video with a digital video camera and import it into the software. While using video software, users are able to break their video up into sections, known as clips, which can then be modified by trimming, splicing and cutting. The clips can also be dragged and arranged into a new sequence.
    • Example #1: iMovie from Apple - a type of video software available for both iOS and macOS that allows users to browse clips and create "Hollywood-style trailers and stunning 4K-resolution movies." IMovie allows users to choose their clips, then add titles, music, and effects.
      • Cost: iMovie is included for free with the newer versions of Mac computers. However, it costs $14.99 on the Mac App Store for older Macs. If downloaded on an iOS device, iMovie is free.
      • IMovie can be downloaded for both the iPhone and the Mac Computer. To download it for the iPhone, go to the apple store and search for iMovie. This page describes all the features the iPhone app includes. To download iMovie for Mac computer, click here.
    • Example #2: Pinnacle Studio Ultimate: This video editing software is a sleek and fast nearly-professional level program that allows people to use stop-motion features, multicamera editing, and even 360-degree virtual reality editing. Surprisingly, it is simple to use.
  • Image Editing Software:Imaging software is a type of software that allows images to be edited and converted into different formats such as GIFs, JPEGs and BMPs. Image editing allows users to crop and resize images and add filters to adjust the brightness and color of the images. The two main types of image editing software are bitmapped images, which do not allow for large amounts of zooming due to the image being distorted, and vector graphics which are more expensive and represents the image into different lines, shapes, and points, which do not distort the image when zoomed or projected onto a large screen.
    • Example 1: As the top professional image editing program, Photoshop tries to make getting started simple by already having set templates, and maintaining its status of being a fast and sleek program. it also allows people to do layered editing such as 3D, drawing, and typography.
    • Example #2: GIMP - GIMP, which stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program, is an image editor which features high quality photo manipulation, original artwork creation, graphic design elements, and more. GIMP provides users with sophisticated tools, and is perfect for illustrators, graphic designers, photographers, and scientists.
      • Cost: GIMP is a free software which is available for GNU/Linux, OS X, Windows, and more.
      • GIMP can be downloaded from the GIMP website
