Family: Tipulidae

Distinguishing morphological features of Order: Crane fly larvae (leatherjackets) have been observed in many habitat types on dry land and in water,[6] including marine, brackish, and fresh water.[5] They are cylindrical in shape, but taper toward the front end, and the head capsule is often retracted into the thorax. The adult crane fly, resembling an oversized mosquito, has a slender body and stilt-like legs that are deciduous

Geographical Distribution:

- Larval habitats include all kinds of freshwater, semiaquatic environments

What it eats:

-Feed on the crown and roots of your turf 

Ecological Importance:

- Flies and mosquitoes are vectors of many different diseases including but not limited to: malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, yellow fever, and encephalitis.hey will re-emerge to feed again in the spring when temperatures begin to warm up.

Family: Eupelmidae.

Distinguishing morphological features of Order:

Elongated metallic-colored body with a flat mesonotum, wings with a long marginal vein, some blotched. A long and stout mid-tibial spur, and the fore and hind-coxae widely separated.

Some are wingless or have very short wings


Geographical Distribution: Worldwide

What do they eat? Parasites on a wide range of species of different orders (Lepidoptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Neuroptera, Orthoptera); some are secondary parasites(1)(2)

Life Cycle: Parasites of a wide range of hosts; some species parasitize hosts of several different orders. A few are parasites of spiders.

Remarks Some are good jumpers; this ability is made possible by their capacity to bend the head and abdomen over the thorax, somewhat as click beetles. When they die they usually bend the head and abdomen over the thorax.(2)
