Required Text: Kreitner, Robert. (2009). Management, 11th ed. New York: South-Western Cengage Publishers. ISBN10: 0547148488. (As of January 2011, list price was approximately $200, although I found used copies for as low as $90-$110 online).

Computer Competencies: Required This course requires a basic knowledge of computers, the use of required email and on-line research techniques. Students are required to utilize their GGC email addresses in all email communications with the professor. It is recommended that students check their GGC email accounts on a daily basis.

Student Policy: Students are expected to abide by all policies in the catalog of Georgia Gwinnett College and the School of Business as well as all policies posted on the official web site of Georgia Gwinnett College and the School of Business.

Attendance Policy: Attendance will be taken at each class. Students are expected to arrive on time for classes and to attend each class for the full class period. Any student who accumulates 5 or more absences will receive “0” points for participation in the calculation of their final course grade. It is each student’s responsibility to keep up with the number of absences they are accumulating.

Please be on time for class. Coming in late disrupts the class and shows a lack of consideration for others’ time. It is your responsibility as a business student, and a future business professional, to learn to be on time for appointments. This class is one of your appointments.

Written medical excuses will be required for missed exams. If a student has an excused missed exam, he or she will be given a different exam from the one they missed. For an unexcused absence for an exam, a make-up exam may or may not be given at the discretion of the instructor.

Handouts that supplement classroom topics will be given out occasionally during the semester. If a student is absent on a day when these handouts are provided, it is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with other classmates to make copies of their papers.

Course Description: This course provides an introduction to the management process, emphasizing planning and strategy, organizational theory and structure, organizational behavior, ethical leadership, motivation, communication, and team building.

Course Objectives: The course will provide students with:

1. An examination of the study of management functions and processes as applied to organizations and to individuals in organizations. 2. A knowledge base for understanding the importance and challenge of practicing management in contemporary organizations. 3. An introduction to the broad range of issues relevant to managers in the 21st century.

Course Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, a student should be able to:

1. Discuss the importance of management in today’s organizations. 2. Describe the functions of management and their relationship to organizational performance. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the effect of an organization’s environment on management functions. 4. Discuss current theories and research in the field of management. 5. Demonstrate the ability to apply management concepts and processes to real-world management situations. 6. Demonstrate effective written and oral presentation skills in articulating management concepts.

Students are expected to attend class regularly. If you miss a class, please notify the instructor. Participation in class is expected. You will be expected to interact with the professor and other students during class.

Coming to class prepared is essential. In order to effectively participate in class, you must have completed the readings. We have little time to spend together, and it is imperative that it be as productive as possible.

Exams: Exams will cover specifically assigned readings as well as information covered in class. The weight of each exam is proportional to the number chapters it covers. Students are responsible for assigned materials not covered in class. Students are not allowed to use any notes, books, or other assistance during the exams. The final exam date is TBA.

Chapter Reading Quizzes: To encourage students to read the text for each chapter prior to class, online quizzes covering information in the chapter will be assigned on Blackboard/Vista. Quizzes must be completed by the deadline assigned. Students are free to use the text and their notes when taking the chapter reading quizzes.

Management Interview Project:

The objective of the manager interviews project is for students to gain additional insights into management outside of the classroom by interviewing managers working in an area in which the student is interested. Complete project materials will be posted in a separate document. Objectives of the project include:

To gain a better understanding of everyday managerial responsibilities & challenges. To reinforce understanding of the types responsibilities held at each managerial level tend to vary based on management level (frontline, mid-level, or top-management). To better understand how the external environment impacts organizations. To gain practical managerial advice from experienced, successful, real-life managers. To gain insights into the similarities and differences of managers working in different organizations and industries. To provide an opportunity for student professional development by interacting with professionals in their field of interest


Individual Report:

For the individual report, each student is responsible interviewing at least three individuals using a list of questions provided by the instructor. Responses for each manager should be typed on separate “Interview questions” sheet using complete sentences. After conducting each interview, a “Post-Interview Information Analysis” form is to be completed, relating interview responses to concepts from the text. Responses to “Interview Questions” sheets “Post-Interview Information Analysis” sheets should be typed and submitted with the individual report. Instructor will provide students with interview questions, post-interview analysis forms.

Team Report and Presentation:

For the team report, assigned team members will analyze all manager responses as a whole. Team members should meet to discuss similarities and differences in responses among managers. Comparing responses will enable the group to identify themes and patterns in the responses. For the team report, the team should provide a summary of findings outlined by “Group Analysis of all Interviews” provided by the instructor. For the team presentation, the group should create a 15-20 minute PowerPoint presentation that summarizes findings from “Group Analysis of all Interviews” report responses. Students frequently tell me that they do not like team projects. However, employers consistently tell faculty members that they want to hire individuals who can work well in teams. Collaboration is a crucial component of successful organizations. Learning to collaborate well is a core competency for every leader and manager. The only way to learn how to work well within a team and how to collaborate with team mates is to be given opportunities to practice these skills and to receive feedback on your performance. Please note, too, that one of the outcomes of this course (Outcome #6, p. 2) is that “students will be able to demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills in articulating management concepts.” These are the reasons we assign team projects.

Presentation skills include: speaking loudly and clearly, looking at the audience while speaking, being organized and prepared, knowing your material well enough so that you do not have to read your notes and presenting a professional business appearance. A professional business appearance means that you should dress as if you were going to a professional job interview.

If a team is not prepared to give their presentation on their assigned date, all team members will receive a grade of “0” for this assignment. If a team member is absent on the day of their team’s presentation, that individual will receive a grade of “0” for this assignment.

Participation/Class Citizenship:

The instructor will lead class activities throughout the semester and will often take up the written portion of in-class activities. Students present in class participating in a given activity will earn one participation point; those not present earn zero participation points. There will be no participation point makeups without a valid written excuse. Students are expected to read all assigned materials before coming to class and to be prepared to participate in all class discussions on the assignments and in class activities. Each student is also responsible for showing consideration and respect to other students and for the learning environment. This includes no sidebar conversations, jokes, whispering, doing homework for other classes, playing with cell phones or participating in other distracting behaviors during the class. If a student is observed doing any of these behaviors, they may be asked to leave class; at a minimum they will receive a “0” for the day’s participation grade. Please turn off or silence cell phones or any other electronic devices that would be considered a distraction.

If you use your laptop during class, it is only to be used for class activities for this course, such as taking notes. You should not be doing any non-class activities on your laptop during class time.

Team Building Exercises:

To facilitate the development of team building skills, each student will be assigned to a group which will be responsible for researching, proposing, and facilitating a team building exercise. Team building exercises will focus on outcomes identified by the text as important to the successful functioning of teams, including building trust, improving communication, developing group problem solving skills, etc. Activities should appropriate for groups of 3 or 4, with five to seven groups in each class. Activities, including a debriefing should last approximately 15-20 minutes. All activities must be approved in advance by the instructor. More details regarding the assignment will be provided.


Note on Written Assignments:

All written work will be collected on the day it is due. Late papers will not be accepted for the team assignment. Grades for other papers or assignments not turned in on the due date will be lowered 5 points for each day, or fraction of a day, of lateness. Papers should be free of writing and mechanical errors and smudges, neatly typed and printed on a high quality printer. All multi-page papers must be stapled. Do not put papers in a plastic cover; a cover sheet/title page with a staple in the upper left-hand corner is sufficient. Papers that do not conform to these requirements will not be accepted.

The course syllabus provides a general plan for the course. The syllabus or sequence of learning activities may be subject to change, at the professor’s discretion, to enhance learning opportunities for students. Any such changes will be announced in class. Students are responsible for all announcements made in class.

Your Professor:

Mr. Gresch earned his BS in Communications with a minor in Business Administration at Flagler College, St. Augustine, FL. He earned his MBA with a concentration in International Business at the University of Florida, in Gainesville, FL. He earned a Master of Science in Management with concentration in Human Resource Management and Organizational Change at the University of Central Florida. He is currently completing his PhD in Business Management with concentrations in Human Resource Management and Organizational Change at Auburn University in Auburn, AL. Mr. Gresch’s primary research interests lay in the areas in human resource development, and the successful implementation of organizational change.
