Robotic Payload for RSGS Mission Moves to Next Phase of Development
DARPA has completed a major review for Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites program. During the July review, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory built the robotic payload, presented critical design and integration products. NRl has morethan 15 years of expreience in space robotics, focusing on system architectures, and robot laboratory testing facilities. The RSGS program shares characteristics with two other relevant programs. The first is the Consortium for Execution of Rendezvous and Servicing Operations (CONFERS) and the second is NASA’s Restore-L mission. Several program elements have advanced beyond the design review stage such as flight versions of two dexterous robotic manipulator arms. Moreover, launching of the RSGS robot servicing vehicle is targeted for 2021.
